Motown Sounds to fill the air on Friday Night, April 22
The Supremes Mary Wilson, one the original members, will bring the groups library of hits to the Beachside stage at the 21st Annual Pompano Beach Seafood Festival. “We are very excited,” said John Good, the events organizer. “It is unfortunate that Eric Burton and the Animals had to cancel, but it gave us the opportunity to get The Supremes Mary Wilson for Friday nights show.”
As a Detroit teenager Mary Wilson was inspired to become part of what turned into the most successful female group in history, The Supremes. To chronicle that success, Wilson became a best-selling author with her autobiography, "Dreamgirl...My Life as a Supreme," on the national best-seller lists. "Dreamgirl" sold more than 250,000 copies in hardback, received rave reviews and became the most successful autobiography of all time.
Growing up in Detroit's Brewster Projects, Wilson fantasized about being a singer herself ("My mother says I was born singing"), and when she was only 13 years old, she befriended Florence Ballard, Diane Ross and Betty Travis. The quartet formed a singing group, calling themselves The Primettes. The girls auditioned and later were signed to Motown. Eventually the group became a trio consisting of Wilson, Ballard and Ross. A name change was needed and the group became The Supremes.
Once they hooked up with the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, The Supremes became America's most prolific hit maker. "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Come See About Me," "Stop in the Name of Love" and "My World Is Empty Without You" were all No. 1 hits. In fact, The Supremes had 12 No. 1 singles, nearly 40 albums, and were, without a doubt, one of the most influential, memorable, and successful icons of the turbulent 1960's. Only Elvis and The Beatles proved to have as far-reaching appeal and impact on the pop music of the times. As testimony to the success of the Supremes, Wilson shared the stage with Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr and George Harrison in January 1988, when The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Once Diana Ross left to pursue her own solo career in 1970, Wilson took up the mantle and sustained The Supremes through 1977.
Much to the delight of her fans, Wilson recently inked a recording contract with CEO for her first solo album in 12 years. Titled "Walk the Line,” the CD/LP featured all new material. In a review of her first single, "One Night With You," Billboard stated, "It appears that the other ex-Supreme has created a bona-fide pop radio hit with this dramatic power ballad. Wilson delivers a stirring performance."
The only original Supreme to undertake the challenge of legitimate theater, Wilson made her stage debut in December 1988, starring In "Beehive," a musical tribute to the female groups of the 60's. Playing before sold-out audiences across Canada, she received enormous acclaim for her performance. Mary Wilson Is the only original Supreme to travel the lecture circuit, motivating all that come to hear her. She also performs around the world with various symphony orchestras.
Today, she continues to enjoy success as a solo performer. In concert, Wilson's "springwater alto" shines most brightly on ballads. Onstage, she performs classic torch songs, Supremes standards and modern greats with a voice rich with emotion and fire.
In addition to the Supremes Mary Wilson on Friday night, Saturday will feature Badfinger in the afternoon and John Kay and Steppenwolf in the evening. Sunday’s music fare will have a Cajun flavor thanks to Louisiana’s Chubby Carrier with his Bayou Swamp Band and JO-EL Sonnier.
Through out the three day event here will also be performances by some of the areas best local artists including Valerie Tyson, Breeze, David Soreff & The Coral Reef Revue, Joey George, Nori Nori and The Low Tides with their “You can’t Tuna Fish,” tour, just to name a few.
And of course there will be lots of the finest seafood fare ever in the newly designed Food Court as well as the Boardwalk Bazaar and the new “Pompano Jack’s Fun Zone” located at the north end of the boardwalk. The Festival’s kid’s area fun zone will feature games, Bungee Jumps, Rock Climbing Wall, Bounce Houses, Face painters and more.
All this for just $8.00 per person with children under 10 admitted free. The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival is located at the end of Atlantic Boulevard where the street ends and the beach sand begins.
